Brown says Sunderland need fans at their best for Norwich trip

Sunderland
defender Wes Brown says they need the fans at their best for the trip to Norwich City.
Sunderland
supporters booed at the final whistle of Saturday's 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace.
Brown said: "I'm not absolutely sure why we seem to play better away from home. We have managed to score goals away and it has been totally different at home. Maybe some of the pressure is off, I don't know.
"Maybe the home fans are getting in to their team and we are just playing. Hopefully we can take that in to next week. The fans are great away from home and they do help us.
"I remember the Fulham
game, when all of the fans travelled down, they were brilliant. Believe me it helps. If we were playing really terrible, I could understand it. We just need to start getting points on the board. We are going to keep on trying, just as hard as the fans are.
"We are trying to play the best football we can. The fans have been great for us this season so we have to start winning for them. We tried our best and I hope they saw that. We just need to get points on the board."

Two Premier League clubs working with DNA profile company

Two Premier League clubs are working with a personal genetics company to provide DNA profiles of their players.
The Daily Mail says the two clubs have commissioned genetic profiles of their players to identify their strengths and potential weaknesses.
The clubs signed a deal this season with a personal genetics company to provide DNA profiles of both senior and academy players.
The profiles, obtained via a simple mouth swab, disclose the players' balance of speed and endurance genes, whether they have injury-prone genes and the best nutrition to fit their DNA.
The company, DNAFit, is also working with a leading European team but insists all three clubs' identities must remain confidential.

"If Fletch is not available for next week then maybe we will need Giacchi there and then he needs to help us and Iᄀᆵm sure he will because heᄀᆵs a great professional. He will be because he will probably think it was an opportunity lost for him, but we will need everybody."

STATS SHOCKER: Man Utd's Cleverley outshone by England rivals Shelvey, Delph

With less than 100 days to go before the World Cup
in Brazil, Roy Hodgson, like all international managers will surely be starting to put the final touches on his World Cup squad.
Last weekᄀᆵs round of international matches will give Hodgson et al. another chance to run the rule over the various players vying for a place on the plane. In England, one of the players that has dominated the headlines is midfielder Tom Cleverley
and his inclusion in the England squad to take on Denmark at Wembley.
Most commentators and fans are unanimous in their damnation for Cleverleyᄀᆵs role in Manchester Unitedᄀᆵs shocking season. Cleverley came out in defence of his role in the team claimed that the making of him the scapegoat for Unitedᄀᆵs season was grossly unfair. Now opinion and emotion are never good benchmarks for the real picture so we looked at the stats to see what they would reveal. To make it more interesting we also looked at the stats of two other English midfielders who had not been picked for the squad for the game against Denmark ᄄC Swansea Cityᄀᆵs Jonjo Shelvey
and Aston Villaᄀᆵs Fabian Delph.
Starting from the beginning with the bread and butter of an attack minded midfielder ᄄC attacking actions. Out of the three players, Cleverley ranks in the middle of the three players in terms of both quantity and quality. Interestingly, Shelvey far outranks the United man when it comes to good attacking actions.
When it comes to creating chances per game, Cleverley is again between the two players although the number of chances created is significantly behind Shelvey and slightly behind Delph. Shelvey is the stand out player in this regard with more than double the number of attempts than both the other players. When it comes to actual chances created. He also manages to create 1 chance per game ᄄC something that Cleverley only manages, on average, to do every 5 games.
As for individual skill, Delph is the stand out player here both in quality and quantity. Cleverley undertakes less dribbles than Shelvey but his are a higher quality than the Swansea man.
In a previous post we discovered how Manchester United
have crossed the ball more often than any other team in the Premier League this season, but despite this, Cleverley actually crosses the ball considerably less than any of the three players examined. In fact, he only crosses the ball, on average, every 2 to 3 games. Shelvey, yet again, far outstrips the other players both in number of crosses as well as the percentage of good crosses.
Shelvey also gets more shots on goal per game than both Cleverley and Delph combined although, Cleverley does have a slightly higher rate of shots on target and shots that are dangerous. Delph is, by far, the weakest player in this department.
As a midfielder, you are also required to help out in defensive duties and here Delph tops his fellow Englishmen. There is not much to separate the three players when it comes to good defensive actions and bad defensive actions.
As we can see from the above information, Cleverley should be a very worried man as there would be complete justification, based on the stats, to include Shelvey in the full England squad at the expense of the United man.

Spurs keeper Lloris: We didn't deserve Arsenal defeat

Tottenham
goalkeeper Hugo Lloris insists they didn't deserve defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.
Arsenal
won 1-0 at White Hart Lane.
ᄀᄚWe didnᄀᆵt deserve to lose that game,ᄀᄆ Lloris told the Spurs website. ᄀᄚWe know we are in a difficult situation and we lost some confidence after the Chelsea

ᄀᄚBut today we were creative and even after the goal we kept our heads high and we tried to come back.
ᄀᄚSome things ᄄC Chadliᄀᆵs shot that was blocked for example ᄄC went against us but thatᄀᆵs football. Itᄀᆵs like that.

Cahill insists Chelsea players won't mind Drogba celebrating goal

Gary Cahill says Chelsea
players won't be offended if Didier Drogba celebrates scoring for Galatasaray tonight.
Drogba said he might not celebrate should he score against the club where he was a star for eight years, but Cahill would not be concerned even if the Ivorian chose to do so.
"First of all Didier is someone I admire as a guy, he has a lot of respect at this football club and rightly so.
"Emotionally it is going to be strange for him I would have thought. I am sure he is in two minds about celebrations with the feeling he has for the club and the respect the fans have for him.
"Personally if he celebrates a goal it wouldn't offend me, to score in a Champions League game is a great thing, but hopefully he doesn't score.
"We are focusing not just on one individual player but on them as a team and on trying to get a good result."

Chelsea defender Cahill ready for tough Drogba challenge

Chelsea
defender Gary Cahill is up for tonight's battle with Galatasaray striker Didier Drogba.
Cahill won the Champions League two seasons ago with the Ivorian.
"It is going to be tough with the quality player he is," Cahill said.
"I have had the pleasure of playing against Didier before I came to Chelsea
and I have trained against him a lot, so I know his qualities and he has a lot of them. So it is going to be tough but the game is going to be tough generally.
"It was tough over there, we took the first half and they pushed us back the second half, and tomorrow will be tight again but we are playing at home, we'll be on the front foot and hopefully it goes well."

which are in crisis.
Warren Joyce's reserve side surrendered a 1-0 lead in the 88th minute before being consigned to a shock penalty shootout defeat against Bolton Wanderers
in the quarter-final of the Lancashire Senior Cup.
United's youngsters, who beat Manchester City
to win this competition last August, have also seen their progress stunted in the FA Youth Cup, where they were knocked out in the 5th round at Huddersfield Town, while the club are also in severe danger of relinquishing their under-21 Premier League crown.

Chelsea boss Mourinho won't take Champions League progress for granted

Chelsea
boss Jose Mourinho insists their Champions League tie with Galatasaray is finely balanced.
Galatasaray
have never won on English soil, but having lost just once in their last 23 matches across all competitions, Mourinho doesn't envisage there being much to choose between the teams.
"If you look at the result, it's 1-1," he said. "You look at the first game, one team was better in the first half and another was better in the second, so everything is balanced.
"Normally it will be the same kind of match with the result going to the end. I don't think one team will make a result whereby people at half-time know who is going to win."

Chelsea boss Mourinho: Am I the only one who cares?

Chelsea
boss Jose Mourinho says English clubs will always struggle in Europe when their schedule works against them.
Yesterday, Mourinho wanted to know why he was the only voice of dissent among the Barclays Premier League managers.
"Some people donᄀᆵt care," said the Chelsea
boss. "Maybe it does not matter what English clubs do in Europe. Iᄀᆵm the only one speaking about it, so maybe Iᄀᆵm the one who is wrong. You see the managers of the other clubs involved in Europe and they donᄀᆵt speak about it."
Thatᄀᆵs when someone mentioned Arsenal
boss Arsene Wenger had once complained.
"Yeah?" he replied. "And they couldnᄀᆵt change it? If he couldnᄀᆵt change it, it is a lost battle. I give up."

Chelsea boss Mourinho: Premier League clubs Euro record not good enough

Chelsea
boss Jose Mourinho says the Premier League needs it's clubs to be successful in Europe.
Mourinho is upset with the lack of support clubs in Europe receive from the fixture makers.
"I know some people in this country donᄀᆵt care. We have this risk of not one, but at the same time Chelsea
play Aston Villa on Saturday at 5.30pm and Galatasaray play on Friday at 6pm and Olympiacos play on Saturday and United play a derby on Sunday.
"I want to work in a league with more prestige. In my time here before, we had four English teams in the quarter-finals and we had three English teams in the semi-finals."

From brain surgery to League Cup glory, Aberdeenᄀᆵs Langfield revels in triumph

Jamie Langfield
was extremely emotional after helping Aberdeen win the Scottish League Cup on the weekend.
The 34-year old goalkeeper had brain surgery just over two years ago after suffering seizures but has managed to bounce back to guide the Dons to a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Inverness at Celtic
Park on Sunday.
After the match, Langfield admitted that it was a very emotional time for him after getting through a difficult stage of his life but he was over the moon to be able to share it with his wife and two daughters.
ᄀᄚI was down on my knees at the end as the emotion just came through,ᄀᄆ he said.
ᄀᄚIᄀᆵve had a massive two-and-a-half years since my illness and this is what I dreamed of getting back to.
ᄀᄚI wanted a level of consistency playing but to go on to win a cup was just something else.
ᄀᄚThat was for my wife Louise and my two kids Ruby and Maisie who have put up with me the last couple of years.
ᄀᄚTheyᄀᆵve really helped me through. So I just got all emotional as I knew how they would be feeling. I knew they would probably be crying and I just got caught up in the moment.
ᄀᄚIᄀᆵve gone from nearly dying two-and-a-half years ago to winning a cup at Parkhead with a team I love and I want to be part of. Thatᄀᆵs incredible.ᄀᄆ
Regarding how much it means to his daughters, Langield added: ᄀᄚI knew how chuffed they would be. I had the cards the girls gave me yesterday in my locker and just thought about them constantly. It was all for them.ᄀᄆ

Real Madrid legend Ronaldo: I still remember Man Utd support

Brazilian legend Ronaldo admits the support of Manchester United
fans is still something he thinks about today.
Ronaldo famously hit a hat-trick for Real Madrid
in a Champions League win at Old Trafford.
He told RWD Football: "It was a very important moment in my career and mainly a moment of fair play in football history because I was playing against Manchester United
at Old Trafford and a few minutes before the game was over, I was substituted and the whole stadium stood up [from both sides] to give me a standing ovation; that was a powerful moment in my career."

Drogba in Mancini bust-up ahead of Chelsea clash

Galatasaray
striker Didier Drogba has played down a touchline blow-up ahead of tonight's Champions League return to Chelsea.
Drogba is no soft touch and is still capable of those public displays of anger.
In Karabuk on Friday, when he was substituted by Roberto Mancini
during a 0-0 draw, he kicked an ice bucket in anger.
"Iᄀᆵm not the manager, but when there is disappointment you have to accept the managerᄀᆵs choices," he admitted. "Of course, it is frustrating."

Eastern and Western conferences still extremely competitive at this stage.
Both the Eastern and Western conferences in MLS remain very close in the race for a play off position, attesting to the competitiveness of MLS.

Although some may bemoan the lack of a super-club in MLS, few can argue with the excitement that the relative parity between teams brings. Eight teams in both the Eastern and Western Conferences are in with a shout at making the play-off positions, and such a constantly changing competitive environment will help the development of the League as a whole. Last year’s MLS Cup finalists, LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo, are both seeded 5th in their respective conferences.

Henry and Cahill could return in time for New York Red Bulls

Henry missed RBNY’s 2-0 loss to Columbus Crew.
New York Red Bulls could have two designated players back in contention for their home game against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, according to MLSsoccer. Henry missed Saturday’s 2-0 loss to the Columbus Crew due to an inflamed Achilles, and Tim Cahill has been out of contention since suffering a torn PCL in a tackle with Yordany Alvarez in the Bull’s match against Real Salt Lake at the end of July.

“I fully expect Thierry to be available this weekend, 100 percent,” said  Red Bulls coach Mike Petke. “It was something that I was aware of all (last) week. I didn’t know exactly what was going to happen and then on Thursday, we made a precautionary decision. It was acting up and we went with it.”
“Cahill practiced fully today, 100 percent, no limitations,” added Petke. “That’s a phenomenal sign, obviously. Judging by today’s performance. I’d expect a very good possibility that he’ll be available but we still have three practice sessions to go.”
Despite Cahill’s injury being the more severe of the two, Petke said that Henry’s is one that will always linger.
Still, Petke insisted he was not losing too much sleep over Henry’s recurring Achilles issues.
“It’s been lingering for years but I’m not overly concerned because the one thing I learned from Thierry is he’s finally at a place in his playing career where he wasn’t in the last couple years,” he said. “He would throw caution to the wind (in the past) and not worry about the next day just to get on the field and that’s when he gets the problems. That’s how I was as a player and that’s, in my mind, why I wasn’t able to play a bit longer.
“I’m not concerned. I think (resting him) was the right thing to do and that enables him to, what I consider, be 100 percent available for this weekend, a big game at home against Philly.”
Petke also reported that he would give an update on the fitness of Lloyd Sam on Thursday, who suffered a knock to his left quadriceps in his man of the match performance against Sporting Kansas City on August 3rd, which New York won 3-2.
